Stage play explores the love drama between the rich and the poor

Love and Recession examines the drama surrounding a young farmer who wishes to marry the daughter of a Chief, who happens to be a long-time neighbour.

With the economy looking so pale and on the brink of partial recovery, with figures not even adding up anymore, we can only find comfort in the one thing everyone wants the most- Love. But then, how do we even sustain the love in this era where money means a lot to our daily living and maintenance?

The play, Love and Recession, examines the life of a young farmer, Elemude, a long-time neighbour of Chief Sowande, has come to gain permission to propose marriage to Chief’s daughter, Ronke.  Chief is overjoyed at this news as Ronke is already an old maid by Nigerian standards. As such, he immediately fetches his daughter so Elemude can propose on the spot. However, Elemude is an anxious hypochondriac, and while drumming up the courage to propose, he inadvertently gets into an argument over a nearby piece of land.  The fight escalates and Elemude leaves in anger.  In mutual anger, Chief tells his daughter “and the idiot came here to propose marriage to you”.

Desperate to be married, Ronke goes into hysterics and begs her father to bring Elemude back; yet once again, the two get into a second argument. To Ronke’s dismay, Elemude collapses from his exhaustion over arguing, and apparently dies. However, after a few minutes he regains consciousness, and the relieved Chief all but forces the two to get married on the spot.
