Student creates photo series protesting rapist's release

Brock Turner was convicted of just six months for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, he served just three months before being released from prison.

Photo series protesting sexual assault and rape

Turner was welcomed home by armed protesters who stood outside his house with placards.  A lot of people expressed their anger online as well.

An Ithaca College student, Yana Mazurkevich, aged 20, channeled her anger frustration into an art form that makes a strong statement against the crime.

She created the photo series titled 'It Happens photo'. The photos in the series depict both male and female victims and attackers.

The photo series was made for a sexual assault awareness media platform called Current Solutions depicts different scenes of sexual assault.

Each photo shows an attacker and his victim, with the victim staring straight at the camera. The scene is then accompanied by phrases starting with 'it happens'.

The photos scenes are inspired by real life stories of survivors of sexual assault, however, the victims in the photo series are played by actors.

One of the photos shows a woman lying next to a dumpster with her underwear down around her legs in a scene reminiscent of Brock Turner's assault of an unconscious 23-year-old woman in January 2015.

She was rescued by two male passersby who stopped Turner from escaping. For this time, Turner was sentenced to just six months in prison, but he ended up serving only three.

The photos feature both male and female attackers and victims, sending the clear message that anyone can be a victim of sexual assault.
